Timber Preparation
Without the proper preparation, staining timber is a waste of time and money. Whether refinishing a deck or antique furniture, stain appearance and lifetime depend on correct timber preparation. This is one factor that separates professional timber restoration companies from handymen, painters, and "DIY" homeowners.
Particular treatments depend on the condition, age, and species of timber, as well as if an old stain is still on or in the timber. If no stain or old, weathered stain is present, a specialty timber cleaner is used to remove surface and substrate dirt, mould / mildew, and remaining stain. With more intact stains, speciality timber strippers are applied to emulsify the stain and permit easy removal. Chemical concentrations, types, and dwell times vary. Correct exterior timber preparation is an art, learned through experience.
A pressure wash is used to remove the timber cleaner or stripper. Experienced pressure washing with the correct pressure and water flow protects timber from damage, which can easily occur with a person who has limited experience with timber. An acidic neutralizer / brightener is next applied to all timber to neutralize the caustic treatment and insure the timber is at a proper pH prior to staining.
Staining
Stain selection also separates the pros from the amateurs. We will not apply inferior, consumer grade timber stains or oils. ATDM will only use a tried and tested brand of products. Why? In our and other quality contractors’ experience, everything else on the market is deficient. Some of these stains turn black from mildew infestation, many must be stripped every other year, and virtually all others do not condition the timber. Many inferior oils attract dirt and quickly go black and unsightly and require maintenance every 3 months.
Maintenance
As our slogan says, “don’t confuse low maintenance with no maintenance”. With all timbers, maintenance is required, and is a long term investment. Timber is a beautiful natural product and should be maintained every year to keep its natural beauty, else the weather will rot away at your investment. Once timbers are prepared and stained correctly the first time, it is important to upkeep your timbers with an annual pressure clean and recoat. This service provides for checking of any loose boards and renailing where required. We also offer timber board replacement if your boards have rotted.
Other services
ATDM offers a complete job. Sanding of any splinter hazards and resetting of "popped" nails is included in our normal services. Timber replacement, concrete cleaning, partial house washing, and other exterior cleaning you may require while we are onsite is available. Just ask.
